Kuukauden kuvat // Pictures of the Month

Pictures of the Month kilu's special! As 2016 is starting to wrap up, I had a look at the list of the shows that I've been to and there's quite a few that haven't been mentioned on this odd ball lil' gig-diary of ours. This one stood out not only 'cos the gig poster has been decorating my closet door but because one of the mentioned bands are on the line up of one of the gigs I'm most looking forward to in December.

So all the way back to February with I guess at this point slightly indistinct memories from the shows but whatever, I guess good thing this one is under Pictures of the month title then!

PAKKOSYÖTTÖ

Pakkosyöttö, this somewhat all-star line-up band played their first gig this night and I always appreciate to hear more in Finnish hardcore when done well. As the picture might indicate, the band put some emotion to their performance. That or just someone who tripped over untied shoelaces. I've not seen Pakkosyöttö since this and I have a hunch that when the next time comes, it will be like I had never seen the band before - partly cos they didn't stick to my memory in any special way and partly 'cos now they've got more gigs under their belt and most likely will play even more tighter and heavier set. Looking forward to that.

SICK URGE

Fast. FAST!!! Those are the only words that I had written down months ago. In a nutshell that's Sick Urge gig. It was thrilling to watch vocal duties being switched between the guitarist and bass player and with such fast paced songs they didn't even seem to catch any breath in the midst. Playing furiously like the source of electricity for their instruments, monitors..hell, for the whole venue depended on just how fast they can shred/bang that what's been given. After the band was done, I was very pleased I had completely slept over Tampere 's leg of this tour as the first bands of this day didn't play there. They will though on January 28th at Vastavirta! Hopefully I'll make it to that one.

KOVADLINA

There was a quick discussion with the bands and in result punk rockers Kovadlina from Czech Republic took the stage next and by what a storm. It was such a contrast to see the band's singer being like possessed madman on stage as off stage he came across as a very smiley happy-go-lucky person. One didn't need to be able to understand any Czech as universal language of music was so evident that the words sung really meant something to the performer. Towards the end of the set a lil' speech, along these lines, praising the unity that can be the outcome with music and the DIY scene revolving around it. Followed by this during the song the singer (who obviously stole the show you could say) then bashed his forehead open with the microphone and I guess this point I did wish I knew what the song was about because it so went to his emotions. The song is also on the video clip I took of the gig found at the very end of this post.

Speaking of music bringing people together. It was also a nice surprise to see a familiar face touring with the band (wad up T!). He told me how first they were supposed to also tour in Russia but when that didn't work out this Finland run shaped up to be pretty much a short holiday; playing shows, hanging with friends, enjoying good food and great times in general.

REMISSIONS
Posterboys of Vastavirta-klubi's gig posters. There has to be a ready to use poster base for Remissions' Vastavirta gigs for sure. Nothing wrong with actively playing - the opposite!

How to follow such a gave it all set? How about with much heavier music with a dark, twisted concept set (interest points raised!)? Sounds about right way to go and exactly what Remissions went with. Diversity within the bands is what made the night a success. Not the most memorable set but after fast paced hardcore and punk rock these doomy sounds brought up a warm feeling despite the topic of their songs. I would not mind seeing all the bands again at some point = success! -kilu ✌ // YYKAAHOOVEE

Pitkästä aikaa KK-postaus, jossa ei puhuta lainkaan vierailla kielillä. Tai no, vielä tänäkin päivänä suomirap saattaa olla joillekin täyttä hepreaa.

Elastinen @ Tampere-talon Sorsapuistosali, Tampere 20.10.2007

Vuosia ennen Vain elämää -sarjan buumia Tampere-talossa järjestettiin A-live nimellä ikärajattomia, päihteettömiä keikkoja, joilla esiintyi nuorison suosikkeja huokeilla lippuhinnoilla. Tämä keikka olisi kustantanut 6€, mutta ystäväni Pertsa meni ja voitti Aamulehden kilpailusta tänne piletit kera fanitapaamisen tapahtumassa soolokeikoilla esiintyneiden Iso-H:n ja Elastisen kanssa. Siellä sitten pönötettiin Fintelligensin ja muiden voittaneiden seurassa kysymyksiä esittäen, samalla kun kuolattiin vieressä olleen herkkuja notkuneen pöydän antimia. Juuri kun ehti innostua sipseistä selvisi kaiken ollleen varattuna illan esiintyjille prkl. Muistan ton eväspöydän paremmin kun itse keikat, jotka nekin meni kyllä ihan messevästi. Tän idea oli varmaan vaan esitellä Elastisen sikkiii six-six-sixpäkkiii!

Fintelligens @ Ruisrock, Turku 7.7.2012

Ruisrockin Rantalavan keikat ovat yleensä kovaa kamaa, eikä tämä gigsi ollut poikkeus. Suomirap ei ollut mulle vielä tässä vaiheessa kovin tuttua huttua, mutta olin fiilistellyt Fintelligenssin Mun tie tai maantie -lättyä kevään ja kesän aikana, joten päätin käydä tsekkaamassa tyyppien livekunnon kun kerran samassa lokaatiossa oltiin. Keikka sijoittui lauantain alkuiltapäivään ja paikalla olisi voinut täten olla enemmänkin jengiä, mutta ihan hyvä soppa saatiin keitettyä siitä huolimatta. Olen todistanut parin viime vuoden aikana useita Elastisen soolokeikkoja, mutta ne eivät ole tehneet samanlaista vaikutusta kuin tämä Ruissin veto. Festarikeikoissa on se hyvä puoli, että settilista on sinkkupainotteinen eli tällainen ei niin syvällisesti asiaan perehtynyt tyyppikin saa juonesta kiinni ja osaa jopa laulaa joissain biiseissä mukana. Mikä boogie sai muistaakseni kaikista setin biiseistä jengiin ylivoimaisesti eniten liikettä ja keikalla vedettiin muutenkin ilahduttavan paljon biisejä Mun tie tai maantie -levyltä. Ei ollenkaan turha reissu siis.

Vuonna 2013 fiilistelin samaisella lavalla ensimmäistä kertaa erästä toista papattajaa ja voin suureksi ilokseni sanoa olevani sillä tiellä edelleen. - juoksepoistytto

Kuukauden kuvat // Pictures of the month

Syyskuu ei ollutkaan ihan tavallinen kuukausi, sillä blogi saavutti pari viikkoa sitten kypsän yhden vuoden iän! Synttäreiden kunniaksi päätimme tehdä vähän erilaisen postauksen ja fiilistellä kenties erikoisinta ja päättömintä keikkakokemusta, joka ei ihan helpolla unohdu.

The Red Paintings @ Sputnik, Münster, Saksa 27.2.2014

TRP on bändi, joka rakastaa teemoitettuja kiertueita. Vuoden 2014 headline-kiertueen teemana oli muinainen Egypti ja ei siinä sitten auttanut muu kuin kehittää rundia varten hillittömimmät releet mitä maa päällään kantaa. Kultamaalia, yönmustaa kajalia, flamingohatut ja siihen vielä omin kätösin askarrellut siivet ja tadaa, egyptiläiset flamingojumalattaret valmiina bailaamaan ja hämmentämään! Hämmennysaste jäi kuitenkin odotettua lievemmäksi, sillä olimme tietämättämme kaupungissa valtavan karnevaalijuhlan aikaan. Naamiaispukuihin pukeutunut kansa täytti turut ja torit, eivätkä älyvapaat pukumme täten aiheuttaneet paikallisten keskuudessa minkäänlaista kummastusta. Bändillä ei kuitenkaan ollut aavistustakaan karnevaaleista, joten shokkiarvo ei valunut onneksi kokonaan viemäriin.

Keikasta jäi päällimmäisenä mieleen ultimaattinen mitä helvettiä täällä tapahtuu -fiilis, sillä paikalla oli kameraryhmä, joka kuvasi koko keikan ja piiritti meitä kovalla intensiteetillä. Annoimme jopa lyhyen haastattelun tyypeille gigsin jälkeen lähinnä siksi, että karkuunkaan ei ehditty. Meille ei koskaan selvinnyt mihin illan aikana kuvattu matsku oikein päätyi tai mihin tarkoitukseen sitä aiottiin käyttää. Ehkä hyvä niin. Absurdimpaa keikkakokemusta saa hakea, tätä muistellaan vielä kiikkustuolissa. Mikäli joku nyt alkoi miettimään, että mikäs ihme tällainen The Red Paintings oikein on, niin klikkaapa kaveri tästä ja lue lisää!

This months theme? Festival visitors, frequent and not so frequent ones!

Morrissey @ Ruisrock, Turku 9.7.2006

Morrissey is not a stranger to Finland but the gaps between his shows have been minimum two years so can't really label him as the most frequent flyer to this place. At the time of this gig Morrissey and The Smiths were just names that I had seen some of the bands I listened to mention as their influence/someone they looked up so my musical knowledge was just some of the biggest The Smiths hits. For me seeing Moz live wasn't a near religious experience like to some of the other ones next to me at the front -who were so fanatic it was a bit scary. I do remember how effortlessly he sang and how good it sounded. Text is lacking so onto the pics!

Now when looking back at the setlist from the gig that was pretty cool aye. Oh and I was at the front cos I wanted to secure a good spot for Tool. Epic shizzle! -kilu

The Sounds @ Qstock, Oulu 24.7.2015

When you see The Sounds in a Finnish summer festival's lineup (and that's quite often!) you usually go yay instead of nay. I was looking forward to this gig, since they were headlining and hadn't been in the country in a while. The Sounds is a band that always delivers, or so I thought. It turned out that I was sorely mistaken. This was the lamest show I've ever seen from them. I kept wondering what the hell happened to this band, they used to be top of their class! It felt like everything was in slow-motion and even the biggest hits didn't make my dancing legs twitch. I didn't stay to watch the encore because I was so bored and thus opted for getting a good night's sleep.

They played here three times this summer. I didn't see them, but friends who did told me that they loved the shows. I truly hope that the yawn-worthy Qstock gig was just an odd and rare exception that won't be repeated.

Kuukauden kuvat

Kuukauden kuvat ja Karmarock Edition! Karmarock oli aikoinaan meidän molempien vakiofestivaali, vaikka nykyään olemme melko lailla vieraantuneet tästä Harjavallan ylpeydestä monestakin eri syystä. Kyseessä on kuitenkin sen verran perinteikäs ja erikoislaatuinen tapahtuma, että menneiden vuosien muistelu on paikallaan. Kuvia tulee molemmilta tässä kuussa kaksin kappalein, sillä monien vuosien festarointisaldosta on hankala valita vain yhtä räpsyä.

Appendix ft. Herra Ylppö @ Karmarock 29.7.2006

Tää oli meikän toka Karmarokki ja sitä aikaa kun Maj Karman setti alkoi Motörheadin Orgasmatron-kappaleen Orgasmaattori -versioinnilla. Porilainen punk-yhtye Appendix julkaisi samana vuonna Syyntakeeton nimisen albumin jonka päättää Ei raha oo mun valuuttaa uusintaversiointi johon vokaalit levyllä tarjoilee Herra Ylppö. Odotetusti samat sävelet kuultiin myös livenä! Kymmennen vuotta jo tästäkin vierähtänyt, ei kyllä uskoisi sillä kilaroinnin määrä on edelleen vakio.

Negative @ Karmarock 28.7.2007

Kakstuhattaseiskan koittaessa oltiin ekaa kertaa yhteisvoimin liikenteessä. Tän vuoden kattaus kolahti meikäläiselle suht hyvin kun Maj Karman lisäksi Harjavallassa soitti mm Die So Fluid, Penniless, Sydän, sydän, Raadelma ja tietenkin Negative. Bändi kertoi miten olivat aikaisempina vuosina toivoneet pääsevänsä niemenomaan Karmarockiin soittaamaan, mutta eivät olleet kelvanneet kunnes nyt. Arvelivat johtuvan siitä kun olivat välissä ehtineet sekoilla tarpeeksi. Bändi oli hemmetin hyvässä vedossa ja tää keikka oli törkeen kova noussen yhdeksi suosikiksini useiden näkemieni Negative-keikkojen joukosta. Persaukisina yö viettettiin ulkosalla asfalttia kuluttaen, seuraavalla kerralla tajuttiin ottaa teltta mukaan. -kilu

Nostaligatrippeilyä näiden klippien tahtiin, NGT-klassikot toimii vuosienkin jälkeen!

Frozen to Lose it All / Lost Soul / The Moment of Our Love

Lovex @ Karmarock 26.7.2008

Kuvanlaatu taattua 2000-luvun digikamerakamaa, ai että! Kotikylästämme ponnistava Lovex ei ehkä ole se ensimmäinen bändi, joka Karmarockista tulee mieleen. Yksi festarin vahvuuksista on kuitenkin mielestäni uskallus ottaa ohjelmistoon sellaisia artisteja ja bändejä, joita ei yleensä vastaavilla vähän enemmän undergroundiin kallistuvilla festareilla nähdä. Pystytin itse aikoinani teltan Negative-leiriin, enkä hypännyt koskaan tosissani Lovexin kyytiin, mutta tamperelaisena ei bändin tuotannolta voinut mitenkään tuohon aikaan välttyä. Vaikka Lovex ei siis omien lempibändieni joukkoon kuulu, niin Karmarockin keikka on jäänyt kuitenkin mieleen oikein mainiona, energisenä ja hittipitoisena vetona. Yleensä tapahtuman tavanomaisesta linjasta jollain tasolla poikkeavat artistit kiinnostavat ihmisiä eniten ja sen näki tälläkin keikalla lavan eteen kerääntyneen populan määrästä. Kenties Lovex sai Karmarockista haaviinsa muutaman uuden kannattajan.

Lapko @ Karmarock 31.7.2010

Kuvan ihmisolennoista vain yksi viidesosa edustaa Lapkoa, mutta rastapäinen Ville Malja lienee enemmän ja vähemmän kyseisen poppoon ruumiillistuma. Itse keikasta en suoraan sanottuna muista yhtään mitään muuta kuin sen, että Lapko taisi olla illan viimeinen esiintyjä. Seurailimme keikkaa kauempaa ja havahduimme siihen, kun Maj Karma marssi yhtäkkiä lavalle suhteellisen pellit kiinni ja pokaalin kanssa. Satakuntalaisbändit olivat kisanneet keskenään parhaan harjavaltalaisbändin tittelistä. Voittoon johtaneet seikat jäivät meille (ja varmasti monille muillekin) vähän pimentoon, mutta asian ydin lienee se, että Lapko vei pojan kotiin!

You are all familiar with the case when the support act seems to (almost) steal the whole show from the headliner who was your foremost reason to attend - fucking ace right as in the best case scenario it could lead to some next level music related adventures.

Touché Amoré @ The Circus, Helsinki 10.03.2012

When things start to escalate quickly, that would be what happened with Touché Amoré when I first checked them out prior their tour with Rise Against. Their 2011 released record Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me, running just a bit over 20 minutes, became my most listened record of 2012. It was like a sponge absorbing liquid how easily I fell for this band. I saw them three times on this tour, first time took place in Aarhus Denmark where it was super weird to appear like I was their biggest fan of the night by knowing most of the lyrics even when I had just been listening to the band for a few months. Next up were the back to back shows in Finland were luckily more people knew the band. Crowd participation plays a big role at Touché's gigs and if a big venue with barrier requires to get off stage to share the mic better with the sing-along hungry wolves waiting then that's what it is. This rare photo I have of the band is from the second night +18s show where at the start of the set singer Jeremy Bolm asked where the fuck is everybody? Typical finnish behaviour to come in time for the headliner, their loss. I would have never guessed after these shows that by the end of the year I'd see them twenty more times, mostly thanks to their Converge support slot.

Now I haven't see them in over two years but I hope I could change this when they a sure to come back to Europe with their anticipated new record Palm Dreams that will see the light of the day September 16th. -kilu ✌

Minä ja Ville Ahonen @ Korjaamo, Helsinki 13.10.2012

Illan päätähtenä oli Olavi Uusivirta, mutta onneksi eksyin paikalle jo sen verran ajoissa, että lämppärikin jäi haaviin! Minä ja Ville Ahonen kuului tähän meikäläiselle aika tavanomaiseen "nimi on tuttu, musa ei" -kerhoon ja keikan tunnelma pääsikin sitten yllättämään täysin. Englanninkielisen laululyriikan suurena kuluttajana olin alkanut tuohon aikaan pikku hiljaa heräillä siihen, että suomenkielinenkin musiikki voi olla oikeasti hyvää ja jotain muuta kuin pelkkää iskelmää. Keikka antoi tälle henkilökohtaiselle musiikkivallankumoukselleni uutta voimaa.

Tämä keikka oli ehkä runollisin livekokemus mitä olen koskaan päässyt todistamaan, eikä pelkästään siksi, että settilistan vieressä seisoskeli puolityhjä punaviinilasi tai siksi, että lavalle eksyi jostain jo ujosti nuupahtaneita ruusuja. Keikka oli yksinkertainen ja koruton, mutta se tarjosi kuitenkin kilokaupalla uutta pohdiskeltavaa. Biiseissä oli samaan aikaan melko surullinen, hauras ja haavoittuvainen pohjavire, mutta niiden tarinat olivat vahvoja ja pitivät kuuntelijan rautaisessa otteessaan. Olihan se Olavikin tietysti super niin kuin aina, mutta tällaiset Ville Ahosen kaltaiset mustat hevoset syöpyvät aina mieleen toden teolla.

From now on Pictures of the Month posts will have some sort of theme we base our photo picks on since we have kinda done that by accident a few times already, ha! This time it's all about longing for some certain place in the world as we both suffer from constant travel fever. Pack your bags and join the ride to Pieksämäki and London!

Sir Mr' Taf @ Poleeni, Pieksämäki 26.5.2007

Pieksämäki. Monille vain asemakaupunki, jossa hypätään junasta toiseen, mulle paljon enemmän. Kulttuurikeskus Poleeni & paikallinen artisti Sir Mr' Taf, siinä on erittäin kova PMK-combo joka tulisi vähintäänkin lisätä yleistietouteen tästä Etelä-Savon maakunnan kaupungista. Tämä (jälleen) kovin laadukas kuva on napsaistu Riemu-Festivaaleilta, jolloin Poleenin salissa ja aulassa kuultiin kahden päivän aikana yhteensä 17 eri musiikkiesitystä - kolmetoista niistä tänä päätöspäivänä. Tämä keikka löytyy youtubesta ja hyvä niin sillä olin ihan täysin unohtanut jo keikan välissä tapahtuvat kilpailut, joista esim videota kuvannut voitti maljakon! Osa 1 / osa 2. Enemmän haluan hehkuttaa kuitenkin keikalta ostamaani HUOM SIGNEERATTUA Nuotiolla CD:tä ja tuota aivan hemmetin nerokasta raksi ruutuun systeemiä riippuen siitä miten levy päätyi omiin hyppysiin. Ja vielä päivämääräkin mukana, so cool! Jos multa kysytään niin nämä ruudut saisi levitä kaikkien levyjen kansitaiteisiin. Tarea aina sillon tällöin bongailee Pieksämäen katukuvassa, meibi taas next time ja toivottavasti suht piakkoin! -kilu ✌

Nightwish @ O2 Brixton Academy, London UK 11.03.2009

London, one of my favorite places on Earth spiced by one of my favorite bands. The gig was a part of Dark Passion Play World Tour and the grande finale of my five-day solo trip to London. I had the worst flu ever and spent the majority of the day sleeping in my hotel room and eating unhealthy but oh so delish meal deals. When I arrived to the Academy I was greeted by the longest queue I had ever seen in my life, but somehow I managed to get a really good spot from the third row. I really can't remember any specific details about the show, but live music often makes you forget unpleasant things. I was completely unaware of my sick and snotty state for an hour and a half, because I was so immersed in the awesomess in front of me.

Poison The Well & Thursday @ Great Hall, Cardiff, UK 22.11.2009

Cardiff was the last show on Rise Against's 2009 tour so their tourmates Thursday and Poison the Well (+crew) did a lil' dance session during Dancing For Rain's piano intro while Rise Against was off stage. Let me show you a short clip:

This has to be my one of my all time fave headliner+support band combos I've been fortunate enough to witness myself. What also made the night extra special was when PTW dedicated Prematurito El Baby "To the two ladies up front" = me and my friend. We had been fangirling about the mentioned tune after their previous gig in London, so that was a nice surprise before going mental to the song. People next to us, who didn't really care for the supports, called us crazy. I'll always take crazy as a compliment when it comes to live music shizzle. As far as I'm aware this was actually Poison The Well's last gig before the 2010 announced hiatus. Now they are back in business and playing handful of shows in June-July after the two 2015 re-union shows. Here's hoping something happens in Europe too. -kilu ✌

Gerard Way @ The Circus, Helsinki 5.2.2015

MCR no longer exists, but you can never take that band out of my system. I wasn't really all that blown away by Gerard's first solo album Hesitant Alien, but I felt an odd sense of responsibility towards this gig and the guy. Showing up was the only option and in the end I was glad that I went.

Firstly, I got to catch a glimpse of one of the coolest roadies in the business and experience some hardcore nostalgia. Secondly, the songs sounded a million times better live. There's a strange buzzing noise going on when you listen to the album and it kinda rubs me the wrong way, so it was nice to listen to the songs with "pure" melodies and without distractions. Thirdly, I have never seen Gerard so confident and I was so happy to see that he seemed to have a really good fucking time. He was very relaxed and chatted with the crowd a lot, something you hardly ever saw with MCR. Even though many people were wearing MCR shirts and whatnot, no one made any stupid remarks about it or demanded to hear their songs. Everyone seemed to be genuinely excited about G's solo stuff which warmed my little black heart.
